Site Model
For our first assignment it was a group work, we had to go to Jao Tim which is located in Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Sultan in the center of the city. Our assigned work was to build a site model of the near surroundings of Jao Tim, we are given a two kilometer radius to work on our nearby surroundings of Jao Tim for example the buildings, roads, public transports, rivers, flora and fauna and whatnot. We were given four weeks time to finish our model and present it after our trip to Penang which i will be talking about further into the blog.
Forgotten Culture
Our second assignment was about forgotten culture. Culture and tradition has been slowly forgotten through time, the current generation wouldn't even bother to learn the ways of their own culture and tradition of their own races. Time has pass and the current generation has already move on to much more advanced things such as technology.
We have to choose a dying culture in Malaysia and create a conceptual model by applying a combination of three to five keywords. I ended up choosing mahjong which i saw in the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion during the trip to Penang and had me inspired in mahjong
This is the antique mahjong sets that i saw in the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion that made me choose the dying culture, seeing all the youngsters slowly forgotten about the infamous game i feel a need to show the beauty of mahjong and continue it's legacy.
For my keywords i have chosen drill, paint, layer and melt. I took a bamboo and drill it in a wind like pattern of the game flow and then made some handmade mahjong tiles on the bottom with layers of bamboo and melted candle, i then painted the tiles and also the back of the bamboo light.
Artist In Residence (A.I.R)
Jao Tim Is Located in Kuala Lumpur, jalan sultan in the city centre. it’s above a shop called HAI-O and it’s a famous cafe which is instagram worthy. there are several public transportations to that location which are by LRT as well as bus.. We are required to design a space related to our project two forgotten culture and a space for artists to rest. The workshop's name is called Pong Tradition and there are several major spaces as well as minor spaces. Major spaces containing gallery, workshop and mahjong gaming center, minor spaces which are artist's resting area, refreshments and also waiting area.
We are required to present two A1 boards and two A0 boards during our final presentation, i've learnt a lot during this semester on computer applications like sketchup and photoshop. I know from now on i shouldn't just give up half way and just stick thru it no matter how hard or stressful things get. I am really grateful for all the lectures that helped me to get thru till the final presentation. I heard a lot of feed back from the external judges about my design where they mentioned i used too much textures and didn't think about the artists as well as the target audience how to make them feel comfortable. I will take this learning experience and hopefully grow from it in the next semester.
